As the days progress, we are moving towards the future. So, why not fully embracefuturisticvibes in fashion?! Holographic looks perfectly capture this essence. The fabric has rainbow undertones as glittery as a mermaid's tail and an eye-catching metallic finish that’s impossible to resist.
Holography, a 70s inspired trend, was mega-popular in 2013. High-profile brands such as Jonathan Saunders, Burberry, Blumarine, and Stella Mccartney incorporated the material into their Spring ‘12 and ‘13 runway shows. The galactic effect was included in accessories, nail polish, booties, bomber jackets, and even makeup!
Celebs have picked up on the trend and included it in their red carpet ensembles as well.Moonlight’s Naomie Harris wore a holographic bodysuit under a sheer Marios Schwab gown to the London Premiere ofSkyfallin 2012 while Cat Deeley, the host ofSo You Think You Can Dance, sported holographic leggings to the 2013 Teen Choice Awards. More recently, in 2016, Dakota Fanning (Twilight; I Am Sam; Charlotte’s Web)stunned in a Miu Miu holographic gown at the Venice Film Festival.
Personally, I’m hoping we all embrace this cosmic-cool trend all over again in 2018. But we must remember: we arenotmermaids (although that idea does sound pretty cool…). The holographic runway looks of the past are quite spectacular, but if we bring the fabric to street style, minimalism is key. If you’re wearing a holographic piece of clothing or accessory, it’s better to keep the rest of your outfit’s color palette muted so your statement piece can shine (literally!).
Glimmers of iridescent clothing are starting to pop up lately, especially in music festival attire (hello, mini backpacks!). Moon-dust colors have even made their way into galaxy makeup palettes by Anastasia and Fenty Beauty!
As spring approaches, I will definitely be watching to see if holographic looks make their comeback. The snowball effect can begin with just one trendsetter. The future of holography in the fashion world can begin withyou.
