Fall Fashion Trend Series: Florals Go Dark

This autumn’s lineup of fashion trends is a particularly eclectic mix. Featuring moody florals, 90s-esque neons, and more, there are options for every personality and preference. Whether you choose to incorporate them as a simple accessory or rock them from head to toe, the latest trends serve as the ultimate guide for you to draw inspiration from as the leaves begin to fall. Introducing the Carrie’s Chronicles Fall Fashion Trend Series: over the next two weeks, a series of articles will be released, featuring the top five styles in vogue and how to adopt them into your own wardrobe. This edition’s trend in the spotlight: florals go dark.

The trend typically reserved for the spring is getting an autumn-approved update in rich, moody hues. Over the years, florals have transformed from furniture fabric into a high-fashion statement: in the 1950s, floral drapery and upholstery adorned homes while the 1960s featured the flower crown, a style staple of the decade. But this fall, runways have proven that springtime-esque florals are capable of being embraced in colder months as well, without looking as if you’re living in the wrong season. Miu Miu proofed the trend for chilly temps in the form of a buttoned coat, complete with faux fur shoulders and a cap; Dries Van Noten converted the pattern into a source of comfort as a puffer coat; Isabel Marant featured a laid-back adaptation by pairing a deep floral maxi dress with a thick leather belt and boots. “Spring is bleeding into fall with this romantic trend. Designers are embracing dark, vintage florals everywhere this season,” Kelly Dillon, influencer and host of the podcast “Kickin It Back with Kelly,” confirms. “We aren’t just seeing them bloom on silk dresses, but floral details have also been popping up on winter coats and knit separates.” Gloria Cospito, an NYC-based fashion stylist, seconds the notion: “Voluminous, short and tight, or ruffled and ruched, the new fall florals are for a new kind of fashion girl, one just as feminine as she is gritty.” To try the trend, Cospito recommends pairing dark florals with even darker items such as latex, leather, or hardware. “Doorknocker earrings and thigh-high boots will also do well to tell the story of a tough fashion girl gone soft on flowers,” she declares.
