GraceRose Bauer Turns Cystic Fibrosis Into Style Success

At the tender age of 16, GraceRose Bauer (aka Rosie G) has already made her mark on the fashion industry. After being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, Bauer made it her mission to raise awareness. Her way of doing so? By designing and selling clothes as well as hosting annual fashion show fundraisers that began when she was only one year old; when she was ten, Bauer designed and auctioned off her first collection, “Rosie G,” at the annual fundraising event. Her clothing line serves as a fashionable way to bring attention to and raise money for cystic fibrosis, as she believes it’s not well-known. The clothing line is inspired by Bauer’s love for the two cities she calls home: Los Angeles and New Orleans. She handpicks all the fabrics, curating a collection of clothing that is ultimately “cute and comfortable.” So far, Bauer has helped raise over $300,000 through her advocacy for Cystic Fibrosis, and she has even established her own 501 C-3 non-profit: The Grace Rose Foundation. Bauer is also the Cystic Fibrosis Ambassador for California Winemasters—the largest CF Fundraiser on the West Coast—and the only patient and Corporate Sponsor for Children's Hospital LA. Below, the philanthropic style star reflects on her journey thus far.

What is cystic fibrosis and why is it so important to you to support research?

Cystic fibrosis is life-threatening, and there is no cure...yet. In people with cystric fibrosis, a defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, sinuses, and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to infections, extensive lung damage, and, eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients. In the sinuses, the mucus blocks airways, leading to chronic headaches, fatigue, and overall discomfort. Medical advancements have helped increase the average lifespan from toddler to young adult. When you look at me, you have no idea that I undergo treatments and take several medications every day just to stay healthy, eating and breathing. I really want to help find a cure so these things aren't so difficult for me or anyone living with it.

How did you come up with the idea to create a fashion line to raise money for the cause?

My mom and I have hosted fashion show fundraisers since I was born.  She was in that industry and thought it would be a fun, creative way for me to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis. When I was ten years old, I asked her if I could design the collection for the show. We auctioned off the clothes at the event, and people kept asking me where they could buy more and continue to support my cause, so we started a website and eventually started selling the line to stores. It really became a creative outlet for me! I have my own non-profit foundation called “The Grace Rose Foundation,” but I give the money from the fashion shows to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I’m also starting a new program that will support the mental health aspect of living with a life-threatening disease. I want to give grants for therapy and meditation, two things that have really helped me. I'd even like to start my own wellness center!

Why did you decide to call your clothing brand, Rosie G?

That's my alter ego! When I was little, my mom said I would get dressed up, put on lip gloss, sing, and dance in the mirror, and I had this whole new sassy attitude. Since I'm part Cuban, people would say, “Here comes Rosie G!”

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

I've always been really into comfort, and I like classic styles. I'd say my designs are easy to wear, casual, and cool. Sometimes, for my shows, I design dressier items, but they’re always comfortable. My style is still evolving. I think it's always good to try new things and see if they work for you.

How would you describe the Rosie G girl?
Casual, cool, comfortable. And nice, since they are supporting a good cause!

What was your greatest challenge in launching your brand?
I'm learning so much about this industry. There are always challenges, but I guess just getting the word out was the biggest one!

How did you get celebrities on board with your brand?

Most of the celebrities or influencers who wear and support my brand either reached out to me, or I found them through Instagram. Everyone has been super sweet, and a lot of them have become my good friends. They have learned a lot about cystic fibrosis and really want to support however they can. I think they really like the clothes, too!

What was the process like planning your most recent fashion show?

It starts about eight months before the event, First, I like to come up with a theme, then we have to find a venue, reach out to sponsors, find models and entertainment, create invites and tickets, and more! It's a nice distraction. I have a lot of fun doing it and it feels good to be raising money and awareness for cystic fibrosis.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

I'm very proud of my clothing line and all the fundraising I do. Besides my own event, I help raise money for Children's Hospital LA, where I am a patient—we have a big event in March. I'm also the CF Ambassador for California Winemasters, which is the largest CF fundraiser in California. But I'd probably say my biggest accomplishment would be getting a lead role in a play! I'm obsessed with musical theater.

What do you hope for your brand to accomplish in the future?

I really hope it continues to grow and expand to accessories, even makeup. I'd also love to have stores.
