Ruby Jay Inspires Teens With Her New Single “Goals”

Fourteen-year-old actress and vocalist Ruby Jay is making big moves with the release of her vibrant new single “Goals.” The teen—whose YouTube covers have amassed over 4.9 million views—released her first single, “Cherry Pop,” in 2018, and has released two more original songs (“Young Love” and “My Universe”) since then. “Goals” specifically speaks to Jay’s generation, with relatable lyrics that speak to the nature of teenage relationships (“You say that I’m your crush/I keep falling in love/You be making this hard on me”). Below, the songstress shares the inspiration behind her latest tune.

Who or what inspired your new song, “Goals?”

“Goals” was inspired by teens who want to be in a relationship but don’t have the time because they’re focusing on their own things such as their career, school, or activities outside of school.

How would you describe the style of your music?

“Goals” is a powerful song with an important message told in a vibrant/upbeat tone.

What was the process of producing your song like from start to finish?

The song was already pre-written by an amazing songwriter, Lynniah Herron. So, we headed up to Stockton and met up with her at The Write Key and recorded the song until everyone was happy with the outcome. Then, the production team came in and worked their magic to make it the song how it is now!

How does “Goals” differ from previous songs you’ve released?

“Goals” is a lot more upbeat than my other songs and has a hip-hop base to it. “Young Love” and “My Universe” have more mellow tones.

What do you hope will be the main takeaway from the song?

I hope that teens will hear this song and realize that they don’t have to be pressured into doing anything they don’t want to do. They have so much time in their future to focus on relationships, so there‘s no need to rush into anything right now. Take your time.

What type of music can people expect from you in the future?

I have a lot of music planned, and none of them are the same! I’m testing out a bunch of different styles to see which songs feel right and what fans want to hear more of!
