Skyler Guthrie's Big Break on Brat TV's Stage Fright

Nineteen-year-old Skyler Guthrie has just received his star turn. After playing supporting roles in Comedy Central’s Tosh.0 and the film Wicked Ones, he was recently cast alongside fellow teen influencers in Brat TV’s Stage Fright. Guthrie plays Mikey on the mystery series, the “golden-retriever” of a group of students who investigate an accident that occurred during a school production. Below, the actor unpacks his journey on the new series.

When did you first develop your passion for acting?

I developed my passion for acting when I was in fourth grade. I auditioned for the community theater show, What Happened in Hamelin. I got a small speaking role, and after that, my love for acting grew!

What is your favorite part of acting?

Getting to act like someone I’m not. I love getting to express myself beyond who I am.

What was the audition process like for Stage Fright?

The process was super exciting! My first audition was a self-tape, and then a couple of days later, I got a callback to come audition in person. I was so nervous, but when I got into the room, I just decided to have fun with it. I guess it paid off!

How did you tap into your character?

When I got the script, I realized Mikey was a goofball, so I decided to watch That '70s Show episodes and study Ashton Kutcher’s character, Kelso. I pulled a lot of inspiration from him while trying to put my own spin on the character.

Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments you can share?

One time, while we were filming a scene in The Crown Lake Chronicle office, I had this one line that I couldn’t say without laughing! Every time I said my line, this huge grin would spread across my face, and the whole cast would start smiling. It was so hard not to laugh, but after a few takes, I finally got it together!

How did your experience filming Stage Fright differ from Tosh.0?

Tosh.0 was different because it was a quick, two-hour film day for a skit in the show. Stage Fright was a whole month of filming many episodes. My preparation for Stage Fright was far more thorough than it was for Tosh.0.

What does being a part of the Brat family mean to you?

Being a part of the Brat family means so much to me. They’re such a warm and welcoming family to be invited into, and I’m so grateful for the relationships I’ve made from filming Stage Fright.

What do you hope people will take away from watching Stage Fright?

I hope people will realize that friendship means everything. All of the characters come together to find out the truth. They all stick together and work as a team to get to the bottom of the mystery.

What’s your endgame? What do you ultimately want to accomplish in the future?

I would love to win an Oscar in the future. I hope to be able to work on more unique projects so I can continue to push myself in all aspects of acting, whether through film or television. As long as I’m doing something in the industry, I’ll be content.
